The Muslim Woman’s Guide to Fashion: Layering

Layering. It’s a thing.

In the second installment of our guide, it’s all about layering. Two options come to mind: the good ol’ basic long-sleeve tee and arm sleeves.

Picture this if you will: You’re in a dressing room with a beautiful dress or blouse that you fancy but shucks, it’s sleeve-less/short-sleeved!

Basic Long-sleeve Tee

These basic tees are a life-saver for when you have dresses or blouses that don’t quite measure up in terms of sleeve length. Layer them up with a complimentary shade or of the same colour with the dress/blouse.

You’d want to get the ones that have spandex, elastane, modal or lycra in the fabric composition as it will not add bulk to the outfit and are also cooling.

Not sure what colours to get that will go with the outfit? Stick to earthy/ neutral shades like cream, brown and black. They go with almost every printed dress out there.

If you have a few more dollars to spare… Take a mental picture of the colours of your dresses/blouses and pick out one main colour that you would like to accentuate.

  1. Scoop Neck Tee US$7.80
  2. Basic Round Neck Top EUR 9.95
  3. Essential Extended Length Tee US$7.80

 An alternative…

If you’re not a fan of wearing layers of clothes, you could try arm sleeves, which are simply socks for the arms. It comes in various lengths from forearm to full sleeved ones. The cotton ones tend to provide more grip then the elastane/ stretchy ones as the latter tends to slip off your arms.

If you opt for the one-piece full length sleeves (that looks like a bolero) be wary of the arm-hole of your dress/blouse. If the arm-hole is too big/wide, wearing just the bolero might still expose some parts of your skin and underarm.

  1. Full arm sleeves GBP3.75
  2. Shrug Bolero US$6.50

What are your favourite pieces for layering?
